Paul Whiting was a confused thirty something when he woke up one morning and decided to throw in the towel... A towel that consisted of a weary job in the fitness industry, a Toyota Carina, a two-bed rented flat in Aberdeen (with no central heating) and a nine year old stereo system. It was a lot to give up! So understanding nothing about Latin America, armed with a borrowed Spanish dictionary, proud recipient of a 1 day football skills certificate and generally loathing most, if not all, under 16 year olds, he seemed the natural choice to globe-trot towards the frontiers of Guatemala, enrol in an 'alleged' Spanish language school and coach a bunch of street children from Guatemala City. Battling with the schools, teachers, local bureaucracy and the resident Jehovah Witnesses, Paul was a football coach who promised nothing and didn't disappoint. This gritty account of Paul's experiences while volunteering in Central America, with language to match, is both amusing and thought-provoking. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to The Byron Santos Trust Fund and will enable a worthy recipient from Byron's school to study medicine at Guatemala University.
