Garden Journey

Margaret Samuel

128 Pages | over 100 colour & b/w illustrations

234x156mm, Paperback

John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, who had High Cliff built on the South Coast near Christchurch was a botanist and was instrumental in setting up the botanical gardens at Kew in London during the mid 1700s.

In the grounds at High Cliff, which had been landscaped by Capability Brown, Lord Bute created a walled garden to grow new botanical species brought in from abroad. He used British plants to make observations for his botanical tables.

This book follows the story of the garden at Highcliffe Castle in Dorset from Bute’s time to the present day.
