When Upton Had Trains

by Alan Burridge

Upton , near Poole in Dorset has the great injustice of not having too many books written about it.

It has been said that if anything is planned then it never works out as expected; and it is very true of this book. The short essays and verse herein came together over a period of evenings and weekends as a result of some both fond and frightening thoughts about what the village of Upton was like for a young person growing up in the late 1950's and 1960's.

The world changed when each one of us was born and became a part of it, and nothing can ever stand still. Thus, Upton also changed, developed and is still growing in much the same way, and this book reflects how it did so with due reference to the current village layout. If you're new to the area this will be of great interest, or, if you were born and grew up here it will jog a few memories, but either way, it should bring a smile to your face. But mostly, it is a small part of our local history which needs to be remembered rather than forgotten. So this is how Upton was, it may not necessarily have been better, but most definitely quite a lot different.
