Sway at War 1914-1945
compiled by
Tony Blakeley, John Cockram, Nick Saunders and Richard Williams

This book provides personal Memorials for the 50 local men from Sway in Hampshire, who fell in the Two World Wars of the twentieth century.

We are now a full three generations away from the experiences of the First World War and this year marks the 65 th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Although some of the family names of those who died from Sway remain in the village, memory and the oral tradition relating to those who died weaken over time. The aim of this book is therefore to ensue that these men are remembered by future generations as individuals who had status in and identity with the village – just as YOU, the reader, has today.

It has been compiled by the quartet of signatories below. In 2002, Tony Blakeley published Sway from A to Z - A Domesday Book of a New Forest Village at the start of the 21st Century. Whilst researching for this volume he became absorbed by the history and the stories of the men whose names appear on the village War Memorial. John Cockram, Nick Saunders and Richard Williams have compiled and published books on the 20th century war dead of seven separate New Forest towns and villages. This book is therefore the product of skills and interests.

As the inscription on the Village War Memorial reads:

“Sons of this place, let this of you be said
That you who live, are worthy of your dead.
These gave their lives that you who live, may reap
A richer harvest, ere you fall asleep.”

This book will ensure that they are, truly, not forgotten.
