In March 1868 eleven year old Kate Douglas Smith met her literary hero Charles Dickens on a train while travelling between Portland , Maine and Boston, Massachusetts. He was on a second reading tour of America. At fifty-six he was nearing the end of his life. His novels and this meeting were to have a profound effect on Kate's life. Writing became her vocation and she read extracts from her books to large audiences just as Dickens had done. Towards the end of her life she also read passages from Dickens's novels to schoolchildren. Her delightful sense of humour is reflected in her books, which include Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm are full of wit and pathos. She was a gifted storyteller and was able to empathise with people from all walks of life, especially the poor. She cared passionately about the plight of disadvantaged children.
