Bournemouth Rocks!

by Alan Burridge

Much like vampires, Rock ‘n' Rollers usually only come out to play after dark and in this book over 50 groups and artistes who visited venues such as the Bournemouth Hard Rock, the Winter Gardens, Gaumont Theatre, Pavilion Theatre & Ballroom, The Ritz, Chelsea Village and The Village Bowl in Bournemouth, The Royal Ballrooms in Boscombe, The Arts Centre and Technical College in Poole and the numerous fine public houses like The George Hotel, The Old Harry, The Potter's Arms and The Halfway Hotel who supported live music are all remembered.

Venues changed their names, as do shops, and Boscombe's Royal Ballrooms was also known as Starkers during this time and is currently called The Opera House (publisher note - now renamed yet again to the Bournemouth O2).

Somewhat autobiographical to reflect the flavour of the era, I have looked back at some of the musicians and bands who emerged from the local scene, either just for the love of playing live music like The Push, Abel Cain, Natural Gas and Rock Circus or seeing the dream through to making records such as Spontaneous Combustion, Team Dokus, The Dictators, Infantes Jubilate, Bram Stoker, Elias Hulk and Room. Then there were those who went the extra mile: Zoot Money's Big Roll Band / Dantallion's Chariot, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Greg Lake Band, John Wetton with Asia, Andy Summers with The Police, Lee Kerslake with Uriah Heep, and Al Stewart.
